Road of the Dead
It takes 2 things to create an awesome game. Lots of zombies and a fast car. Oh, and a gun, maybe some military, throw in a few civilians to run over, give it an intense storyline, using lots of blood to mix it all up. And there you have it! Road of the Dead! Most definitely one of the best zombie apocalypse games ever!
The story is simple. Your city is over-run by zombies and the military has imposed a complete quarantine, not helping innocent civilians in fear of the infection spreading. In this hellish not-too-far-from-the-future scenario, your aim is only to escape and survive. It’s you and your car against a city full of killer zombies and a military hell-bent on stopping you.
Road of the Dead offers 4 modes, but ‘The Great Escape’ is the one to beat. The gameplay is simple, just drive your way down an insanely long highway to get out alive. Run over zombies and soldiers along the way for points to upgrade your car, but avoid the civilians. They cost you. The game has a lot of small features that go a long way, like wipers to get the blood off your windscreen, and the option to punch out your windscreen if it cracks too much. Another useful one is smashing into the water barrels if your cars on fire, that puts the fire out. The use of constant dialogue adds to the sense of urgency in the game.
Eventually, the zombies begin to mutate and become harder to kill, the military treats you worse than Osama Bin Laden and sends everything it has at you from helicopters spraying bullets to jets shooting missiles and then the highway you’re driving on just seems to never end. I have to admit. The game is a little slow at times, making you wish it would get past levels faster. But it’s a serious load of fun, nonetheless.
Road of the Dead does something very different from your run-of-the-mill zombie apocalypse games, and does it well. So strap in and rev her up, you poor insignificant civilian. It’s time to kick some zombie ass!
