The Soul Driver
Don’t you just love those American outlaw movies where the bad guy pulls one last job before making a run for it? A run to where, you ask? Mexico, of course! And the good old American outlaw haven now has another felon fast approaching; The Soul Driver.
An insanely fun game that will put you in the driver’s seat through the 42 action-packed miles you must drive to freedom. You play a seriously wanted criminal on the run from the law, although you still maintain to keep a healthy sense of humor, supported by the most crooked laugh any cheekily animated character has ever had.
The Soul Driver is quite a simple game, while also being quite a detailed one. Drive the 42 miles to Mexico as fast as you can in what looks like an antique roadster, but not without the entire state’s police force bearing down on you, of course. You must dodge police cars, roadblocks, spike strips, construction workers, birds taking a crap on your windscreen, even land-mines dropped from helicopters!
But on the other hand, the more cops you kill and thugs you mow down, the better! You can also pick up hitchhikers for bonus money. Thankfully, there are 10 garages along the game where you save your progress and are at liberty to spend what you picked up on the road (apparently dropped from a heist van with a loose door) on repairing and generously upgrading your car. The bumper is the most important of these upgrades, while the speed and acceleration help in speeding things up a bit. The game seems to have a tortoise like pace in the beginning, making things a wee bit boring. Those cops aren’t as adorable as they look.
Additionally, the Soul Driver also offers 6 challenges to be completed and 24 achievements to be earned. The game, although controlled with an unusual selection of keys, plays beautifully once you get the hang of it. The obstacles keep coming and there isn’t a moment of rest for your fingers or your concentration. Backed with some wonderful animation and artwork, the game is every bit as fun as it looks. The Soul Driver also has a sweet little soundtrack and the sounds in the game are pretty cool, too. All in all, The Soul Driver is a fun action packed driving game that will most definitely keep you engaged and entertained for a fair amount of time.
The game could have been a little more difficult. Once you’ve upgraded to the max, it’s actually quite easy to press on in the game. But the challenges make up for that, with some fairly difficult ones on the menu. Well, nothing left to do now but evade the law and make it to Viva la Mexico! Happy dodgy driving!
