“Poor old Alice!” Her brother Roddy came to her and demanded tea, and asked her to state a case. He had absorbed her in a single glance, and was now defining her as he worked. Here was the place behind the shed where she had used to hide from Roddy’s persecutions, and here the border of herbaceous perennials under whose stems was fairyland. The audience was made up of parents, teachers, and a few other curious folks from town, all sitting hushed in anticipatory silence as the school orchestra assembled onstage.
